Not getting to the point — 69%
Loud background noise — 19%
Not delivering on a promise — 6%
Constant interruptions — 6%
What This Means
Honestly… I wasn’t surprised that “not getting to the point” was the top answer.
We’re all busy, and as they say… "Ain’t nobody got time for that!"
If an episode feels like it’s dragging or meandering, people aren’t just getting annoyed… they’re leaving.
I know I do.
I’ll give it a minute, maybe roll my eyes a little, think “they should hire me as their editor” (lol)… and then I’m off to another show that I know won’t waste my time.
To be fair, audio quality still matters a lot! I’m an editor, so I’m not about to pretend it doesn’t.
But here’s the thing:
You can have a beautifully edited, perfectly mixed episode… and if it takes forever to get to the point?
People are still leaving.
On the flip side, listeners tend to be more forgiving of less-than-perfect audio if the episode is engaging and actually goes somewhere.
There are exceptions, of course!
Some podcasts can get away with tangents. Especially co-hosted shows that are funny, a little chaotic, and intentionally dorky. (Those are some of my favs!)
But for most of you podcasters out there, that's not your show's personality... so going off-topic or taking forever to get to the topic at hand... will lose the listener.
Why It Matters
You’re not just competing with all the other podcasts out there.
You’re competing with YouTube, TikTok, audiobooks, films, people’s actual lives… everything.
Attention spans are basically nonexistent at this point. You can't argue with me there.
So if it takes too long to get to the good stuff... or you’re going too deep into inside stories, long bios, or side conversations… you’re losing people.
Get to the point sooner, and save the extra stuff for later.
Because listeners aren’t waiting around to see if it gets better.
